Past Event: Breaking the Cycle of Human Trafficking

We would like to invite you to an interfaith event, “Breaking the Cycle of Human Trafficking” with special guest speaker Urmi Basu founder of New Light Center in Kolkata, India which was featured in the documentary, “Half the Sky.” The event is co-sponsored by the Herzl ner Tamid Jewish Congregation of Mercer Island and Mercer Island Presbyterian Church. Please join us on Sunday, May 5 at 6:30pm at Herzl ner Tamid. All are welcome!Urmi is an international expert on sex trafficking, child rights, HIV/AIDS and social justice. Born an raised in Kolkata, India, Ms. Basu founded New Light in 2000 to promote gender equality and fight violence and abuse of women, children and young people in the Kalighat red light district of Kolkata. She is featured in the documentary “Half the Sky,” based on the bestseller by the New York Time columnists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wu Dunn. Ms. Basu will provide a briefing on the state of human trafficking in India as well as report of New Lights’s plans to open a home for boys as part of its mission to break the cycle of human trafficking in Kolkata.
